Dexter is an American drama television series originally based upon the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, however after the first season ended the series developed independently from Lindsay’s Dexter series of novels. The series follows Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C. Hall, who is a bloodstain pattern analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department. However, Dexter also moonlights as a serial killer. From an early age Dexter’s adoptive father Harry Morgan, played by James Remar, foresees Dexter’s need to kill. As a result, he begins to teach Dexter ‘The Code’ which will later govern and regulate his killing.
‘The Code’ states that Dexter must only kill those who themselves are killers and who have killed without good reason and are likely to do so again. It also states that Dexter must be sure beyond a doubt that his victim is guilty. Finally and most importantly, this code states that Dexter must not allow himself to be caught. Long after his adoptive father’s death Dexter continues to follow the code in order to satisfy his dark need to kill, while doing so in a way that he can justify. Dexter is largely devoid of emotions and therefore goes to great lengths to fake normal human behaviour and maintain relationships with colleagues and friends in order to mask his dark double life.
